Today we celebrate the birthday of a remarkable man. My grandfather, my mother's father Ramon. He went to school for only a few years of but later taught himself how to read and write with the newspaper and a few of my mother's elementry school books.
He later went to the army and showed an interest in cooking. How did he get started? Doing dishes.
He later became a chef at the Holiday Inn cooking for banquets and other events. At one point he even owned a candy store. The kind with the pretty clear jars filled with penny candies! He would even bake cakes and muffins for us from time to time. He took as much pride in his work cooking the Christmas ham as he did making me an omelet for breakfast as a kid. I miss my grandfather so much! How I wish I could have learned his craft by him. I love you and miss you so much!! Happy birthday Papi!!
